How to Calculate Gas Mileage

Illuminated Fuel Gauge

The Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA as it’s more commonly known, rates vehicles based on fuel efficiency. There are a lot of ways to calculate gas mileage on Queens roads, not including the gas mileage calculator. Keep learning more with us at Major World below, or be sure to contact us if you have further questions on how to calculate gas mileage.

What is Good Gas Mileage?

There’s really no set standard for what constitutes “good” gas mileage, where gas mileage will vary depending on many factors, such as whether you are in a large SUV or a compact sedan. This is the same in terms of comparing the fuel use of gas-powered vehicles to gasoline-electric hybrids; the latter are usually more efficient.

While purchasing or leasing a new vehicle it’s important to decide how efficiently you’d like your next vehicle to be before you start shopping. Then, compare the EPA estimates for our new or used vehicles and find a model with the gas mileage you prefer in Brooklyn.

Gas Mileage Calculator

It’s easy to learn how to accurately calculate gas mileage in your vehicle. Here’s what you’ll want to do:

  1. Fill your gas tank, and then either reset your odometer or record the exact mileage. Consult your owner’s manual to find out how much gas your tank holds.
  2. Drive your vehicle like you normally would. (If you drive your vehicle slower or quicker than usual, your typical calculated gas mileage may be inaccurate.)
  3. Refill your tank and record your mileage once more. If you wait longer to refill, your calculation will be more accurate — as it will be based on a more balanced mix of driving conditions.
  4. Then, be sure to divide the number of miles driven by the number of gallons your vehicle took.
  5. If you forget to check how many gallons you filled up your car at the pump on your gas receipt, you can go by where your tank was when you refilled (i.e. ¼, ½, or ¾) and then divide out your total tank capacity accordingly by the number of gallons refilled. Then, divide the miles driven by that approximation.
