Why is Premium Gas “Premium”?

When you visit a gas station around Bronx, you’ll typically see several gas options with different numbers such as 87, 89, and 91. The numbers represent the octane levels of the fuel. Regular gasoline is 87 octane, and it is designed for engines with the standard compression ratio.

Higher octane gas is gas that has an octane rating of 91, and it’s usually labeled as premium. Premium gas is better for vehicles that run on higher compression ratios, such as luxury and high-performance cars. Premium gas can help the vehicle prevent early fuel ignition or “engine knocks” which are more common for supercharged or turbocharged engines.

  • Can You Put Premium Gas in Any Car? Yes, you can safely put premium gasoline in just about any vehicle without risking damage. However, you may not see any tangible benefits from using this gasoline. 
  • What Kind of Gas Does My Car Take? Look at your owner’s manual to see what is recommended by the manufacturer. Most vehicles will run just fine on Long Island City roads if you use regular gasoline, but supercharged or turbocharged models will greatly benefit from premium gas. 
  • What Happens If I Use Premium Instead of Regular? If you have a luxury or performance car, premium gas will help you prevent engine knock and allow for better performance. If you do not have a performance engine, there is no need to raise your gas bill as there will be no added benefits.
