DIY Fixes for Scratches

Looking for a do-it-yourself fix for scratches on your car? Here are some DIY scratch removal tips, in the hopes we can save you a few bucks on a body shop visit:

• Candle wax: Not a permanent solution, but candle wax will hold in an emergency. Gently rub the wax over the cleaned area to seal the scratch and prevent further damage.
• Super glue: Like candle wax, this helps seal the scratch temporarily and blends with the vehicle masking the damage slightly.
• Sandpaper: After cleaning your car’s exterior thoroughly, you can very carefully try to use sandpaper to attempt to get rid of shallow scratches. Take 2000-grit wet sandpaper and gently rub it over the area. Once the scratch is nearly invisible, apply a rubbing compound.

DIY Fixes for Dents

No one should have to suffer a dent on their slick Brooklyn ride. Here are some simple dent solutions. Remember, if you don’t feel confident in trying these, you’re probably best off visiting a nearby body shop or service center.

• Plunger: Yes, the one from your bathroom. With that said, they also make car dent plungers—maybe that’d be a less awkward tool? Using a plunger, you can pop a dent out over the course of several attempts.
• Hammer or Mallet: Use a hammer or mallet on the opposite side of the dent to help knock it back into place. The hammer is for small fixes; the mallet is for larger dents. Make sure you protect the side you are hammering with a towel or something—we don’t want to add more dents!
• Dent puller: This method is pretty advanced and should only be done by those who feel adept. Using a drill, make a hole in the dent. Lace wire through the hole and pull the dent back to surface level. Fill the hole, sand it down, and paint.
